Man, what a day to start off the new school year. It certainly was not easy.
When I arrived at work this morning, I was informed that my bus would not be in service and that I would have to take another. First I was told to take 12. A minute later, no better take 14. I grab the keys and the boss comes out, better take 16. Ok, I got 16, a bus entirely foreign to me in every way. Well, this is a fine welcome mat to the new year. First thing I notice is no oil. Then the emergency roof latch won’t close and I cut my wrist trying to get it closed. Then the latch on the engine door is busted. This is going to be a long day. Well, the route went pretty smooth and I came home.
Upon returning to work everything seemed fine. There were donuts to be had, so I had one. Well, the frosting was very sweet and on the way to the grade school it found its way into a cavity. It hurt so bad I could hardly keep the bus on the road and we had to switch drivers at the grade school. Fortunately the sub had some advil and the nurse came out with an ice pack and by the middle of the route the tooth had stopped hurting. Fortunately only 9 kids rode because so many parents picked kids up. I still had a lot of questions about my tooth being asked in the middle of my agony.
So the tooth is better and I get to the school I clean at, and there is no new co worker. She was supposed to have been there at 11:30. I was already covering the boss’ area as he was on vacation. Now it looke like I had to clean the entire school myself. Finally after busting my but for 3 hours, the coworker shows up. She had forgotten that it was only a half day today. UGH! I did all that extra work for nothing? Well, at least I know she is still working and I won’t be by myself all week. WHEW!
Now I am sitting at home feeling like Rip Van Winkle before his 40 year nap glad that the first day is finally over and done with. This had to have been one of the longest school days I have worked, and it ended 4 hours before it usually does. I hope this is not the way the whole school year is going to go.
