Thou shalt not commit adultery.
We’re coming down the home stretch with this, the seventh commandment. This is another direct straight forward command and another that is widely accepted whether one is religious or not, and for obvious reasons. These days it seems to be the hobby of the rich, famous, and powerful. It is also quite pervasive in the general population as well.
There are obvious reasons why one should not be an adulterer. There is a lot of discord wrought in the lives of those who participate in this activity. Broken families, broken lives, murder, anger, jealously, chaos, drama, just to name a few of the consequences faced. Somehow, people just can’t seem to be faithful to a person whom they vowed to be faithful to. Sure people have a million excuses, but that does not justify the breaking of that promise to the person whom you married.
The latest case is that of highly renowned basketball coach Rick Petino. Most people have always thought of this man as a stand up individual, strong morally and mentally. He has a wife and 5 kids. He teaches young college athletes about not just how to play basketball, but how to play life. An affair he had with some waitress has know grown into scandal. Extortion and blackmail, secret abortions and lies, all because he could not keep his trowsers buckled. It could end up costing him his high paying job and had certainly cost him the respect that many held for the man.
He is certainly not alone. Adultery cost former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair his life. The young woman he was having an affair with probably realized that she was only the on the side gal and would never be the one, went off the deep end killing McNair and herself in a jealous murder/suicide.
It nearly cost President Clinton his job as the most powerful man in the world, and did cost many other politicians their jobs as people began to dig up affair after affair. The list could go on and on with high profile cases of adultery In this country.
Over 50% of marriages end in divorce in this country and adultery has taken the number one spot as to the reasons why people divorce. It cost our nation billions of dollars a year that are sucked out of the economy as a result of adultery. there are lawyer fees, court costs, alimony, child support, secret payoffs, people on public aid, the cost of police and paramedics to come to domestic disputes started by it, hospital costs. I am sure I am only scratching the surface of the cost that adultery has on our nation.
I just have to ask myself sometimes, why can’t people control themselves?

I've never seen anyone involved in an adulterous situation who ended up happy out of all of it. It's always a miserable, painful experience for everyone involved. I think people just can't seem to be satisfied with what they have. It's never enough. They're always seeking that instant gratification without regard for the consequences. But there are ALWAYS consequences, even if the spouse who is being wronged never finds out.
And each person thinks they will be the one to 'get away with it'. They do for a time but the truth will come out.
