Finding Truth

These days our country seems more divided than ever.  Om every issue there seems to be people who are diametrically opposed to what the issue is or how to deal with it.  On every issue we face, we see talking heads with such divergent opinions and ideas that it leaves me wondering if they are even talking about the same thing.  Even in something that should be so cut and dry as science, we find that there are competing ideas on what the facts are telling us.  It does not seem to be getting better either, but rather we are growing farther and farther apart.

How does this happen?  How can two people looking at the same issues, the same facts, have such wildly divergent ideas about things?  The most common denominator that seems to be dividing sides these days is the world view, or belief system, of the people.  Our belief system of choice shades how we view everything in life.  Those belief systems tend to be divided upon one thing; the Word.  The word divides the thoughts and intentions of mankind.  Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
In this day of vast information, and the access to it, there is, like never before, an ongoing battle for the hearts and minds of people.  For every bit of truth, there are those standing at the ready to refute that truth and offer some alternative to that truth.  In the same way, for every lie that is being perpetrated, there are those who stand by to proclaim the truth.  With so much information out there, it is tremendously difficult to discern which the truth is and which one is the lie. Most of us do not have the experience of doing the surveys, tests, and research so we have to make a choice on which of the “experts” we believe.  This then becomes a religious decision based upon faith.

Jesus says in Mathew 7, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  The truth can be found.  As shown in the statement of Jesus, it is going to take a little effort.  Notice the verbs, ask, seek, knock.  These imply effort being made to find out what the truth is.  If you are not going to put in the effort, you are not likely to get to the truth.  You have to want it, and that desire will be shown by your actions.  Are you asking?  Are you seeking?  Are you knocking?
