There
is an episode of Spongebob Squarepants where the Spongebob and Patrick become
overcome with the need to be “living like Larry”, a lobster that is into doing
things to the extreme. In the episode,
they feel the need to be truly living life by doing extreme activities, like
Larry the Lifeguard, in order to really be living life.
When one peruses The website YouTube, you can find people doing all kinds of crazy things. I’ve seen people doing gymnastics on the beams of tall structures, people rope swinging hundreds of feet from bridges and archways, jumping cars, bikes, skateboards over obstacles. I‘ve seen people jumping off mountains in flying suits, climbing buildings with no safety equipment, and other crazy things. These make my tornado chasing seem pretty tame, hahaha.
Each one of us, whether we realize it consciously or not, has a need to feel like there is purpose in life. It is written in our coding. We were designed by our creator with an understanding that life is more than just random chance and is more than just the brief amount of time we spend here. We are brainwashed today by theories that try and tell us the opposite. We want to be special, and are told we are just meaningless chance. We believe there is meaning to life, but are told that there is none. We are taught that we are just evolved animals, but know that there is something unique about us.
People deal with these unconscious conflicts in various ways. Some people bury themselves in materialism; careers, money. Some people hide themselves in earthly knowledge. Some people try and drowned it out with drugs and alcohol. Still others try and find a connection in relationships. And, there are those adrenaline junkies who try to assert themselves by surviving crazy stunts.
Romans 2:15 they demonstrate that God's law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. Man can do a couple things with this. They can either acknowledge the creator, or they can drown Him out. In our efforts to drown out those feelings, we will go to great lengths. But, not only do we seek to drown out God, but we also seek to fill that area in our lives that God would be filling. It is God that makes us feel special, wanted, and important, with purpose and meaning. It is those things the thrill seeker is really searching for.
Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
To try and fill the void in our life or drown out what we know to be true with the thrills of this world is nothing but a dead end and is only just a fleeting excitement that passes away. To really know life and peace, to end that internal conflict, to find meaning and purpose to life, one needs to turn their attention to God. We have access to that through His son Jesus who died in our place and rose again defeating death and reconciling us with God.
Our purpose and meaning in life is to know our creator and serve Him. 2 Timothy 1: 9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
