A Hero's Tale

The hour is late and darkness is over the land.  Our hero sits in silent contemplation pondering many things.  His thoughts are scattered and confused.  The problems seem insurmountable.  Where does one begin?  Where does one start to change the tide of blackness that has flooded the land?

The creeping clouds have long been gathering, slowly blocking out the light from view and the people have become accustomed to the dark.  They go about blindly shunning away from any light as the light now hurts their eyes.  They feel around in the darkness, groping about hoping to find their way.  They stumble and fall at the slightest stone in the road.  How does one lead people back into the light when they are so accustomed to the dark that they shun even the least bit of light?

Our hero cries out into the night, feeling small and helpless.  He feels alone and isolated.  Is there no one anywhere who wishes for the light to be returned and to be able to see?  How can one person alone lead such a people out of the darkness?  How can one imperfect creature clear the skies for the sun to shine?

He looks up into the night sky, into the utter darkness and void, and calls out to God.  God, I can't do this alone.  I am not strong enough.  I am not smart enough.  I am so imperfect in so many ways.  I cannot do this on my own.  Show me the way Lord!  A tear ran down his cheek.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, in our heroes mind came these words,  And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? (Luke 24:32)  These words then began to burn in the heart of our hero.  He did not have to take on all of the darkness himself.  He only had to share that burning light one heart at a time.  As each heart begins to give off the light of the fire, it will then light the way for another, and another.  The battle our hero faced was not with everything, but with one thing; the heart of another.  Nor was he battling alone, for the battle was not his.

John 12:46  I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

..... and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
