I read a blog about the poor gay people being hated, discriminated against, and bullied that got into lambasting Christians about "god is love, therefore Christians should love the gay person". First off is this one sided talk about God's love. Yes, God does love us all. But, part of that love comes in the form of correcting behavior that is bad for us. Do I really love someone if I let them get behind the wheel of a vehicle when they are drunk? No one buys the argument that the alcoholic was just born that way and we just need to accept it. We just need to embrace the alcoholic and accept them for who they are and stop denying them their rights to driving. No one would say that.
The Christian would be remiss if they did not warn people of the consequences of sin. We are commanded to: Ezekial 3:19 19 Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. This is more than just duty, but also effects the Christians eternal state. If we love someone, do we want the following for them? Romans 2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile. No. We want them to have what is best, and that best would be eternity in heaven.
Ephesians 5:11 says "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." If a person is practicing sinful activities, the Christian is not to have fellowship with them, but is supposed to tell them the error of their ways. What in common does a sinner have with the righteous? Not very much. The christian is to be heavenly minded, while the unbeliever will be earthly minded.
One of the reasons a sinner gets upset at calling their sin sin is that their own conscience bears them witness that this is true. This is what creates the anger inside at those who do point this out. They want to continue in their sin, and as a representative of the Lord, the Christian reminds them that they are in sin. The sinners anger is not at the Christian really, but at Yahweh, who the christian represents. They see God as hateful for chastising them for sin, so they see the Christian who brings that message that way too.
On the flip-side, yes, Christians can treat others better. We are not supposed to be gossipers, Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. (prov26:20). We are to treat people as we ourselves want to be treated (mathew 7:12). If someone is hungry, you feed them. you are not going to ask, are you gay, then not feed them because they say yes. Jesus says nothing about helping the poor based on anything about the poor. The good Samaritan did not ask the guy who needed help if he was gay or not.
It's a tough balance that I think can only be met with the power of the holy Spirit guiding the believer. The sinner will always judge harshly the Christian who tells them they are in sin, but that is the duty of a christian, to remind them of their sin, and to tell them of the savior who forgives their sin, if they be willing to believe it. The Christian must also check themselves from time to time to be sure that they are staying in God's will concerning treatment of others.
