Today I walked into a bathroom at work and opened a
stall. Staring at me from the bowl is a
brown blob. No, it wasn’t that! It had a rectangular shape to it and upon
closer inspection I could see that it was a wallet. Being the curious sort I am, I had to fish it
out. Yes, it was clean water and I used
a brown towel. I let the excess water
drip off and then took a closer examination.
Right off the bat I could see there was money inside. I proceeded to take a closer look; a ten,
another ten, a twenty, ANOTHER twenty, ANOTHER TWENTY, ANOTHER TWENTY, A
HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL! First thought,
WOW I HIT THE JACKPOT! I closed the wallet
and saw an ID, and a drivers license, some credit cards….
Suddenly it came over me, I can’t take this, God is
watching. I wrapped up the wallet in
brown paper and went to the main office and turned the wallet in.
It would have been so easy for me to keep that money, I thought to myself as I walked away. Nobody would have known the thought in my head said. But, God would have known, I replied to myself. If I had lost a wallet with nearly $200, I would have wanted someone to turn it in so I could get my money back.
Luke 6:31
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
I can just imagine what the look on that persons face is going to be when they get returned to them that which was lost. I’m quite sure a feeling of relief and joy will be had that they are not out the $200 as they thought they were. Perhaps in the good feeling they receive, they themselves might be generous to another.
The golden rule, when applied, makes the world we live in a better place to be. It is not just pie in the sky ideal, but also a very practical one. It creates a positive ripple through life. Just the opposite is true as well. Had I kept that money, the person who lost it would remain upset, perhaps taken it out on someone else, which would make the next person upset as well, and so on and so on.
One never knows the full effect of their actions, but without a doubt they extend far beyond just the immediate effect to yourself. When we do good, or when we do bad, it effects a lot of people. Live your life in love, and make this world a better place to live, and perhaps influence someone’s eternal destination.

Let no man despise thy youth; but be
thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity,
in spirit, in faith, in purity.
