Nothing is Something

Sometimes in the Christian walk, it seems as if nothing is happening.  We go about our business, living our lives, doing what we are supposed to be doing, except…  we seem to be just living our lives, doing what we are supposed to be doing and nothing….     God seems to be silent and nothing spectacular is happening, or so it seems.  When this happens, it can leave us feeling separated from God, lonely, or like we are not doing something right.
We read stories of characters in the Bible and things seem to be non-stop action and God is working in their lives and doing wonderful things.  That is not really the case.  The stories in the bible seem that way sometimes because they are the highlights of what is going on.  We tend to skip over and forget about that often there was a lag in time.

Before Moses went on to be the deliverer of Israel, he spent 40 years living a rather normal life.  He lived what appears to be a quiet and normal life after leaving Egypt, raising a family and tending sheep, before suddenly God showed up.

Joseph spent many years is quiet obedience as a slave, and a prisoner before God exalted him to the leadership role in Egypt.  It didn’t happen overnight.  I’m sure being cast into a pit, sold into slavery and thrown in prison it did not seem that this was God’s plan.

Abraham spent a number of years waiting for God’s promise of a son.  So long in fact that he and his wife grew impatient and tried to do it themselves through the handmaid.  Those long spans in between the salient parts of the story were filled with normal living.

Each and every character, as we really study their lives, had times just going about their business, living their lives, with not much happening that we are told of.  Well, there is one thing… they had faith.  Their faith brought patience and trust.  None of them knew the end from the beginning, or in what ways they would be used.  Neither do we know in what ways God wants to use us.  So, we go about our business, living our lives, and…. living our lives in faith, believing God.  This nothing that is going on is not nothing, but is the time we are being prepared for what it is God has planned for us; whatever that may be.

Psalms 40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
