And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard
seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the
root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. (Luke
17:6)
I once had an unusual incident that proved to me the truth
of this saying. I believe the year was 1994. It was late October, just
before Halloween.
A friend of mine and I were splitting an
apartment in a complex. It was a Saturday night which was our Bible
study night. We got our stuff together and we were heading out the
door. Just outside the back door of the apartment someone had just
placed a freshly carved jack-o-lantern.
For some reason as I
walked out the back door, the jack-o-lantern caught my attention. I
suppose that it was the fact that the pumpkin had been carved with such
an evil look. After a few steps I turned around and shouted at the
pumpkin and said, 'I curse thee in the name of Jesus'. My roommate and I
kinda chuckled a bit at my blurting that out and we went on our way to
Bible class without giving it a second thought.
We had our bible
class and returned back home. We got out of the car and began walking
back to the apartment door from whence we left. Suddenly my roommate
stopped, his jaw dropping to the parking lot surface. I looked at him,
'what the heck is your problem?' He pointed over at the jack-o-lantern.
I
too turned to look and my eyes about bugged out of my head. While we
had been gone, oh, a total of about 4 hours, The freshly carved pumpkin
had completely rotted and collapsed! We walked up to it and examined
it. It was all black and mushy as if it had been rotting there for
weeks. We just kind of looked at each other, and went back inside.
Lesson learned.
